When purchasing weight plates it is easy to just say that they all weigh the same so it doesn’t really matter what kind you get. So I just thought I would share with you some evidence that not all Olympic Weight Plates are created equally.

During the recent hot weather in Sydney a funny thing happened to some of the rubber coated Olympic plates in our showroom and gym. We had some cheaper mixed plates that we had left over and just had them on some gym equipment so customers can jump on machines and have a play.

As you can see from the photo the cheaper plates have discoloured and are covered in a powdery substance.

The Sam’s Fitness weight plates are as good as new.

The commercial grade Olympic weights we stock are made from virgin rubber. To bring prices of weight plates down manufacturers sometimes slip a bit of recycled rubber in to the mix. The virgin rubber not only has a better visible finish it is also more durable. Plus it won’t stink your home gym out if it is inside the house!

Now when I refer to cheaper weight plates, sometimes these inferior plates are more expensive than the $3.20/kg we sell our Olympic Plates for.
